I began working with Shutter Film Foundation in late 2019 through their free storytelling and photography classes, while I was still new to the craft. I went on to lead two projects to completion: a photo-documentary series and a short film.
Nubi Photography Project — a photo-documentary series on the Nubian community of Kibra. Kenyan Nubians descend from Sudanese soldiers who served in the King's African Rifles under colonial rule and were settled in Kibra after their service, a history that is largely absent from the coverage they do receive, which tends to focus narrowly on their long-contested claim to Kenyan citizenship. The series looks instead at their beauty and unique cultural dressing, a distinct culture built inside a city slum's edges.
STOCOMA — a short film, and my first screenwriting project. It follows a day in the life of a young girl who takes her own life after being shamed and abandoned during her period, a story inspired by real events. It sits inside the contradictory messages girls receive about their bodies at that age, and traces how quickly a day can turn irreversible when a girl is left without support at the moment she needs it most.
